Xi states readiness for new step in two-sided ties with Russia

(MENAFN) China’s president stated on Wednesday that he is prepared to work closely with Russia to achieve further advances in relations between the two countries. His comments were delivered in a message exchanged with the Russian leader as part of New Year greetings, according to reports.

In that message, the Chinese leader described 2025 as a milestone year, saying it “marks a concrete step in the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era,” as cited by accounts of the exchange.

The remarks followed recent statements from Russia’s top diplomat reaffirming Moscow’s position on Taiwan. Speaking in comments published over the weekend, he stressed that Russia rejects “any form of independence” for the island and underscored that this stance remains firm.

He explained that his country’s view on the matter is “well-known, unchangeable, and has been repeatedly reaffirmed at the highest level.” He further stated, “Russia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposes any form of independence for the island,” and added, “We proceed from the premise that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for the PRC (People’s Republic of China). Beijing has every legitimate basis for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

These developments come against the backdrop of heightened strain in East Asia. Tensions have risen since early November, when Japan’s prime minister warned that a potential Chinese military move against Taiwan could legally be considered a “survival-threatening situation,” a scenario that could open the door for Japan to invoke its right to collective self-defense.
